For some seemingly unknown reason tonight my copy of iTunes decided to start displaying the following “Saving iTunes Library” dialog whenever I quit the application.

The dialog would only be there for a few seconds but would make my PC completely unresponsive while it did its thing.
I remembered I had experienced this issue before but couldn’t find the site I’d originally found the solution on. A lot of searching later I found this thread on iLounge containing the solution — Exclude your iTunes folder from your Antivirus program’s active scanning.
I realised after this that I had just done a fresh reinstall of my antivirus program, NOD32, to fix another issue and in doing this had cleared out all my previous settings. Adding my iTunes folder to its exclusions list again worked a treat.

Unfortunately this didn’t work for me on THIS go round. Worked fine on XP and Vista with my old antivirus, but with PC Cillin, even after excluding the folders AND specific itunes files- I still get the dialog

I suddenley got this when I transfered my entire iTunes application to a USB2 drive. The whole application apppeared a little more sluggish and I consistently got the dialog box after closing. I tried excluding the folder from NAV2008 as discussed in this thread with no effect.
However I did notice once when immediately shutting down XP after using iTunes, that I got a delayed write error for the file which has led me to conclude that it is a speed isssue.
I moved the library back to the internal hard disk (not the music itself just the other library management files) and the problem went. This is in line with the AV slowing down the read/write operations and would explain the mixed results of others.
WARNING: You cannot just ‘move’ the library files. I suggest that if you are unsure that you look up how you can do this. (Its not difficult if you use iTunes v7 onwards).
